Machu Picchu, literally “Old Peak”, is the modern name of an architectural complex in southern Peru built by the Incas in the 15th century. Palaces, temples and homes are at 2,430 m above sea level in the Andes. It is also called the “Lost City of the Incas”. It was established as a sacred mountain residence of the great Inca ruler Pachakuti.
