For centuries, the monastery of Santa Catalina in Arequipa, Peru, has been a quiet, self-contained community, home to wealthy women who have never left the place. Covering an area of an entire city district, the original monastery was built in 1580 and soon gained a reputation as a club of the chosen, where girls from aristocratic families came to be educated, for a safe haven or as a spiritual vocation. At the entrance of the monastery there is a large inscription Silencio – Silence.
