Peruvians are proud of their country’s geographical diversity. If there is one thing most students remember, it is the mantra of costa, sierra y selva: coast, mountain and jungle. These geographical areas move from north to south, dividing Peru into three areas with different natural and cultural characteristics. The Peruvian coast of the Pacific Ocean stretches 1,500 miles (2,414 kilometers) along the western tip of the country. Desert landscapes dominate most of this lowland area, but coastal microclimates provide some interesting variations.
