El Niño is the warm phase of the Southern Oscillation, a quasi-periodic change in the temperature of the surface layer of water in the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean. La Niña is the cold phase. Unlike El Niño, during La Niña, areas in the Midwest are drier than usual. The alternation of El Niño and La Niña between two and seven years has been observed, albeit with small amplitudes, for at least the last three centuries. Please consider the colors in this water media painting are they warm or cold? Or do they take turns?
