Pisac is a Peruvian village and a remarkable archeological reserve in the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba River in the Andes. The Incas built agricultural terraces on the steep slope, which are still in use today. They created the terraces by pouring a richer topsoil, brought by hand from the lower valley. The terraces have allowed more food production than would normally be possible at this altitude, which has enriched local communities. The narrow rows of terraces below the citadel are believed to be a drawing of a partridge’s wing (pisaca), from which both the village and the ruins get their name.
